Website Reality Check 2026: What 16.9 Million Websites Actually Show
A customer types a question into ChatGPT. Four competitors get cited, your website doesn't show up. Not because it's worse, but because it speaks the wrong language, the language of machines. To find out how widespread this problem really is, I combined two data sources: the HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2024, covering nearly 16.9 million websites, and 729 of our own Rankmio audits from real client projects (January to July 2026).
The core numbers
- 72 percent of the websites audited fail basic AI-visibility criteria (score below 70 out of 100)
- 99 percent of the pages studied skip FAQ schema entirely (global adoption per Web Almanac: 0.6 percent)
- 59 percent of websites use no structured data (JSON-LD) at all
- 100 percent of the product pages checked in the Rankmio sample have no FAQ schema
Methodology: where these numbers come from
The Web Almanac 2024 is an annual, openly documented data study from the HTTP Archive, compiled by independent experts from the web community, not marketing figures from a single vendor. I added 729 of our own audits to that broad base: 74 external domains, 85 free-check reports, and 729 individual pages with detailed GEO page scoring, mostly from the German-speaking market (ecommerce, services, medical practices, small and mid-size businesses). The AI-visibility score is a composite value (0-100) built from structured data completeness, entity linking, author information, freshness signals, and topical coverage; the threshold for "visible" sits at 70 points. One caveat: the Rankmio sample isn't randomly selected, it reflects sites whose owners actively sought an audit, so real-world numbers for unaudited sites are likely worse.
Thesis: technical SEO is a commodity by now
After 20+ years of SEO practice, with tools, plugins, and CMS templates readily available, you'd expect basics like structured data to be standard by now.
Antithesis: reality tells a different story
The numbers clearly disprove that assumption. Nearly six out of ten sites haven't even laid the groundwork for machine-readable content. It's also worth looking at where the gaps are biggest: across the 729 audited pages, product pages are missing FAQ schema in 100 percent of cases, legal pages in 83 percent. Blog content, by contrast, is the strongest category, suggesting more care goes into editorial content than into the actual money pages. This isn't a niche problem affecting a few small sites, it's an industry-wide blind spot, even among sites that are solid on classic SEO metrics.
Conclusion
The gap between what's technically possible and what's actually implemented is enormous. 72 percent of all audited websites fail to reach 70 out of 100 AI-visibility points, meaning seven out of ten sites are practically invisible to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, even while ranking third on Google. The Web Almanac confirms this indirectly: only 1.77 percent of all pages use Article schema, only 1.5 percent Product schema. Fixing this today gives you a disproportionate edge over competitors who simply ignore this groundwork.
The three levers that matter most
- Equip product and legal pages with schema and FAQ: mechanical work with the biggest payoff, since that's exactly where the biggest gaps sit
- Fix internal linking: 20 percent of all pages in the Rankmio sample have fewer than two internal links, 11 percent are complete orphan pages
- Measure AI visibility instead of guessing: regularly check whether your domain is actually cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude
What it comes down to
The 72 percent figure is sobering at first glance, but from a consultant's perspective it's mostly an invitation. The websites that are visible in 2026 often weren't in 2023. The edge doesn't belong to the big players, it belongs to whoever first understood that search has shifted. Being part of the remaining 28 percent already gives you a structural head start before you've even written your first blog post.

FAQ
- What exactly does the AI-visibility score measure?
- Whether a page meets the basic technical requirements to be reliably read, understood and cited by AI search systems, including structured data, entity linking and author information. The "visible" threshold sits at 70 out of 100 points.
- Is classic SEO no longer enough?
- Classic SEO remains the foundation, but the numbers show the extra layer of JSON-LD and entities is simply not used by the vast majority, and that's exactly where the leverage sits.
- Where do the 729 audits come from?
- From real, ongoing client projects analyzed with Rankmio: 74 external domains, 85 free-check reports, mostly from the German-speaking market.
- Where should I start optimizing first?
- Product and legal pages, not the blog. According to the audit data, FAQ schema is missing there most often (100 and 83 percent respectively), while blog content is usually already the best-maintained area.
